It's #TeacherFeature Tuesday and today we're featuring the jovial Jacquelyn Ellithorpe, our 5th grade math and science teacher here at Hemlock Middle School.
We wanted you to get to know Mrs. Ellithorpe a little better, so here are some fun facts about her:
• Her favorite subject in school was English Language Arts.
• After the Comedy Central "Substitute Teacher" video came out, everyone started calling her Jay-quel-in as a nickname.
• If she won the lottery and decided to give up teaching, she’d want to own a bookstore/coffee shop/flower shop/cat café (where, of course, you could adopt the cats too). She wants to open a huge place where she can have all the things she loves in one place.
• Her worst fashion decision ever was cutting her own side bangs in middle school.
• Her favorite animal is a panda.
We’re so thrilled to have you in our Huskie Pack, Mrs. Ellithorpe!

Beyond the notes, being a part of band is a journey of camaraderie, discipline, and passion. 🎶 In the words of Plato, "Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul".

This week's #StaffSpotlight is on the awesome Alex Haltom, our Director of Innovation, Technology, and Media Services ("Tech Wizard") here at Hemlock Public School District.
We wanted you to get to know this delightful Hemlock grad a little better, so here are some fun nuggets of information you may not know about him:
• His favorite thing about his job is encountering new challenges every day. His least favorite thing was when the business department took his parking spot.
• As a child, he wanted to be a Professional Baseball player, Firefighter, and Doctor all at once. He quickly discovered how impossible that would be.
• We asked him which famous actor would play him in the movie of his life, and he said: Shaq. "...because, why the heck not?? It's Shaq". Fair enough, Alex.
• What can he cook to perfection, you might wonder? Frozen pizza. Red Baron, Tombstone, Digiornio, you name it.
• His childhood nickname was 'Big Al'.
We’re grateful you’re part of the Huskie Pack, Alex.

In this insightful episode of the Huskie Pack Podcast, Superintendent Killingbeck sits down with Director of Business Operations Anna Wamack to discuss the upcoming ballot initiative on February 27th, 2024. The focus is the renewal of Hemlock Public School District's non-homestead millage, a key component of the district's annual operating budget, totaling over $1.8 million.
🎙️ Listen in here: https://www.podbean.com/eas/pb-yxeuw-152a593 or wherever you tune into your favorite podcast.
Key Points:
The episode opens with Superintendent Killingbeck explaining the importance of the non-homestead millage for the Hemlock school district, emphasizing its significant contribution to the annual operating budget.
Anna Wamack provides clear insights into what the millage entails, ensuring viewers understand that this is not related to the HPSD bond proposal from May 2022. She stresses that the proposed millage will not impact taxes on owner-occupied homes but will affect second or rental homes, commercial, and industrial properties.
The discussion delves into the consequences of not renewing the millage. Superintendent Killingbeck outlines the potential risks to current programs and the inability to replace this funding through other sources, highlighting the essential nature of this renewal for maintaining educational standards.
The episode emphasizes the need for district-wide participation in the vote, regardless of the lack of direct impact on individual households; this is a function of state law.
Facts at a Glance:
• HPSD voters approved the millage last in 2022.
• The millage is set for a 10-year period.
• Assessed on businesses and second homes, not primary homeowners.
• All residents in the Hemlock Public School District are eligible to vote on the renewal.
• Funds are crucial for district operations and cannot be replaced by other funding sources.
The episode concludes with a call to action for community awareness and participation in the upcoming vote, underscoring the collective responsibility to support the local education system.
