Thank you to our local law enforcement agencies for teaming up to bring their full contingent of drug dogs to our high school and middle school today. Saginaw and Bay County Sheriff's Departments, Saginaw Township PD, and coordination with Richland Twp. PD. WORKING TOGETHER TO KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE!! HMS practiced Secure Mode Safety Drill today prior to the dogs' arrival and continued that throughout the visit. FYI- During these visits, the handlers always "plant" some contraband in areas where students are not present as a means of rewarding the dogs for working hard on their search. That also lets us know that the dogs are actively searching and finding any contraband. Good news=no contraband found! (Except for the "plants", of course). Lots of good questions from our kids as well. If parents have any questions about these visits, please contact your child's school principal for more information.

A big Thank You to Officer Brian Pitt for talking to our students yesterday about his career in law enforcement, specifically about his specialty, computer forensics. This tied in well with Officer Whitney Meissner's message to our kids last week about internet and phone safety. Brian works for a number of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to fight technology-based crime and did a great job of explaining to our students how data storage and retrieval works on social media, phones and other devices. The big takeaway-nothing ever disappears from the internet and nothing is secret!

Did you know that all of our 7th and 8th graders are learning the fundamentals of robotics programming? Today's challenge in Mrs. Kato's room was to use their Chromebooks to program and control Spheros-rolling balls that students can control the speed, direction and color of. Do you know a middle school girl who is curious about technology? Camp Infinity is a one-week summer technology camp for girls entering grades 5th-8th in Fall 2019. Camp Infinity introduces girls to computer and internet technologies through hands-on activities. Campers are split into two groups according to the Fall 2019 grade level: 5th-6th grade and 7th-8th grade. Campers in grades 5th-6th will create their own web page using HTML and program Dash robots. Campers in grades 7th-8th will create their own web page using HTML and program EV3 or Vex robots. In addition, students will participate in mini- sessions that highlight programming skills and real-world uses of technology. Campers will also get an opportunity to meet with women who work in technological fields and explore career options in technology. For more information, please visit the camp registration page at https://mymcwt.secure.force.com/Events/cnp_paas_evt__ExternalRegistrationPage?Site_Id=a2N0a000000dm0nEAA. Thanks to Richland Twp. PD Officer Whitney Meissner, who talked to all of our students today about internet safety and cyberbullying, including the new cyberbullying law that goes into effect near the end of March. Today would be a great opportunity for parents and students to discuss bullying, social media usage, internet safety, and expectations in all these areas.
