Meet: Carrie Nelson - Bridging Health and Learning Meet Carrie Nelson, our dedicated Health Resource Advocate at Hemlock Public School District, who joined the Huskie Pack in November! Carrie's passion lies in connecting students and staff with vital health resources, emphasizing that wellness encompasses the whole person – social, emotional, nutritional, and beyond. She loves building one-on-one connections with students, fostering a culture of care through classroom presentations, interactive challenges, and fun lunchtime activities, all in partnership with the Saginaw County Health Department. Carrie believes that supporting the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of students is foundational to their success, and she wishes more people understood the layered approach and intentional actions that build a truly healthy school environment. Her favorite quote, "People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care," guides her impactful work. Fun Fact: Carrie's dad is one of 18 kids and a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian tribe! This week, we reached a new high point—literally—by placing a steel beam higher than any other on our campus. This milestone marks a major moment in the construction of our new Performing Arts Center, a space that will inspire creativity, amplify student voice, and bring our community together through the power of the arts. We are grateful—deeply grateful—to our voters, our Board of Education, and every partner and worker who is helping bring this vision to life. Today, we're delighted to shine a light on Noreen Zastrow, the dedicated Dean of Students at K.C. Ling Elementary School! Noreen's connection to the Huskie Pack runs deep, as her children began attending Hemlock Schools back in 2010. She officially joined the Hemlock Middle School team in the fall of the 2019-2020 school year and has been a vital part of our community ever since. What Noreen cherishes most about her role is the daily interaction with students, staff, and parents. She finds immense fulfillment in this collaborative environment. In her capacity as Dean of Students at the elementary level, Noreen plays a crucial role in supporting the health of our youngest Huskies. She provides essential social-emotional lessons to all students in grades 1-4, equipping them with foundational skills for navigating their emotions and relationships. Additionally, Noreen offers targeted support to students who need extra guidance through small group and individual sessions, ensuring that every child feels seen and supported. Noreen firmly believes that mental, emotional, and physical wellness are paramount in schools. She understands that students who develop strong social and emotional skills are more resilient, better equipped to cope with the everyday challenges life throws their way, and ultimately more successful. One key insight Noreen wishes more people understood about her work is that many students enter school with underdeveloped social skills. Just like any other academic subject, these crucial skills require explicit teaching and consistent practice to flourish. Noreen's heart for her students and their journey is beautifully reflected in her three favorite passages. "The Starfish" reminds us that even seemingly small acts of kindness can make a world of difference to an individual. Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" speaks to the power of individual choices and the unique paths we forge. Finally, "Don't Quit" offers a powerful message of perseverance and resilience in the face of life's inevitable challenges. These passages embody Noreen's dedication to supporting each student on their unique path to growth and success. And a fascinating fact about Noreen? She has a deep love for history! Thanks to Sports Image Inc. and local Farm Bureau Insurance agent Megan Beldyga for an incredible opportunity. Through their "OPERATION AED" program, Hemlock High School is being offered a FREE AED. This life-saving initiative will provide a fully automatic AED, a "Stop The Bleed" kit, and more. This is all at zero cost to the district.
