Jamie Slate, S.T.E.M. Star

Hemlock has a star in its midst. Jamie Slate has been selected as a 2023 S.T.E.M. Star. Slate has taught courses like chemistry, physics, astronomy, botany, zoology, and most recently - Computer Science. Tom Lockwood, Hemlock’s Head of Friend raising, notes “Hemlock has never been able to offer a CS class before, but after participating in the SCRIPT training and attending a week-long summer workshop, Jamie has offered our first ever CS class at the high school level.”

“His positive attitude is infectious” Lockwood notes, “He brings enthusiasm and teaching excellence to every class he is asked to teach.”. Principal Keith Green and students in Jamie’s classes agree.

Green says “Mr. Slate is always a teacher that is an advocate for students and always open to the reality and possibility of change. He understands that we have an evolving society and that the need for technology and students' ability to utilize the potential of it is a priority.”.

Senior Morgan Walle notes “Mr. Slate has a very open mind when it comes to teaching and has a very patient approach.”. “His attitude is always can-do and positive.”. Other students such as Junior Ana Rodriguez and Senior Alexander Light echo this sentiment, describing Mr. Slate as “patient”, “energetic”, “engaging”, and “understanding”.  Sophomore Alathea McMillan says “Mr. Slate really takes the time to help us understand what he’s teaching us, and if we don’t get it, he takes the time to patiently and graciously explain it. He’s energetic with his teaching and clearly loves what he does.”.

When asked what this award means to him, Slate says “I view this award more as a reflection on the district. Without the training, support, and opportunity I wouldn’t be teaching this course”. About the encouragement and support he has experienced in Hemlock, Slate notes “As a teacher, there is nothing holding you back from being innovative here but yourself.”

Slate will be recognized for this award during the annual STEM Star teacher’s dinner at SVSU on February 21, 2023.
