Hemlock, MI – The Hemlock Board of Education has been working on developing a master plan for the school district with long range facility focus. The district partnered with architect firm, TowerPinkster and construction management firm, Wolgast Corporation to assess the facilities, work with stakeholders, and develop a path forward.

The current version of the master plan touches each school building, with safety and security, technology, fine arts, sciences, athletics, and has opportunities for more community engagement.

Superintendent Don Killingbeck said, “Although the district has a lower tax rate than most of the adjacent schools, it is important to keep taxes low and consider options that would not increase taxes.”

At recent meetings of the Hemlock Board of Education, the board unanimously passed resolutions to move forward with a tax neutral initiative with a scope that would improve facilities for all students. Voters in the school district will see this initiative on the May 3, 2022, ballot.

Board President Matt Wesener said, “The upcoming tax neutral bond initiative is critical to the ongoing operation and success of the district.  We have put together a comprehensive plan based on feedback from the community along with guidance from experts like Tower Pinkster and Wolgast.  I think the most important aspects to be aware of are that this bond is comprehensive in covering all the schools while remaining tax neutral for our community members.”
