Thanksgiving

Hemlock, MI – The canvas was on the minds and hearts of those in attendance but just like a Norman Rockwell painting, the Hemlock Public School District 50th Annual Senior Citizen Thanksgiving Dinner was picture perfect. Gathered with our closest friends and family we celebrated our 50th dinner together, breaking bread and being thankful for one another is an enduring tradition at Hemlock Public School District. The school district started hosting the event for seniors in 1971 as a way of honoring and thanking them for supporting the children of the community.

Superintendent Killingbeck said “This is one of the best events of the year, it is great to connect with our senior citizens and share a good meal and it is always overwhelming to see the community come together to support our seniors.”

This year seniors were welcomed and checked into the event at the middle school cafeteria that showcased a Veteran Display done by Diane Mulvaney. They socialized with one another until the gym doors were opened and were welcomed into the event. As they sat, they noticed a unique placement at each seat created especially for them by an elementary student, a special commemorative coffee mug filled with sweet treats, and the air was filled with the soft sounds of music as played on the piano by Hemlock High School sophomore, Sophia Hauffe.

The district invited celebrities such as Oprah, Martha Stewart, and political dignitaries, like the governor and although they did not show up, the event Master of Ceremonies was Larry Elliot. Local legend, with nearly 40 years with ABC 12, at one point or another Larry had been in nearly everyone’s living room albeit on television. Larry helped to provide that comfort and gratefulness that brings life into the Thanksgiving season. Blessing the meal, attendees, and more was Pastor Clayton Beck from Hemlock’s Well Church. Everyone in attendance received door prizes, generously donated by local businesses, organizations, and individuals.
