Update

Dear Huskie Pack!

We have completed over six weeks of school and our first whole month of classes; it has been magical to watch and see our students reconnect with their classmates, friends, and our faculty and staff. Since my last monthly update, we hosted our homecoming with a parade, game, and crowning of Queen Grace Oldenburg and King Joshua Collins.

In case you missed it, October is National Principals Month. Join us as we celebrate our building leaders at Hemlock Public School District. These leaders help the Huskie Pack move forward each and every day. Please share with them a kind word and let them know that they are very much appreciated.

As a school district, we continue to develop and enhance our relationships with community and strategic partners. The Hemlock Business Association will be hosting their Annual Harvest and Award Dinner on October 13th from 4:30 to 6:30 PM (award presentation, 6 PM).  Also, this past month we have hosted two lunch and learn events at the Lockwood STEM Center, the first for our senior citizens and the second for STEM champions, sponsors, and donors.

This year, we are working on updating our K-8 Mathematics curriculum and resources. Whether it be our instructional practices, base resources, or support systems, we want to ensure student success. We have a team of educators representing classroom teachers, building and district leaders working on this, but we also value the input of our students and parents in this process as well. If you have suggestions, please do not hesitate to let your building principal know.

As a school district, we continue to have a conversation around how we best support students' academic, extracurricular activities, and emotional learning; focusing on the whole child is important to us. In part, this conversation can be heard publicly in a recent broadcast of Over the Shoulder with two of our Dean of Students or in a series of upcoming Hemlock Huskie Pack Podcasts featuring each of our Dean of Students individually.

Looking forward, we continue to work on a strategic and master plan that will help prepare us for the next 3 to 30 years and invite you to be part of this process along the way. Along with everyone else, we also continue to navigate the landscape of the COVID-19 and the pandemic. We are counting on each and every one of you to do your part with handwashing, health checks, following protocols, and using common sense. The Huskie Pack continues to march forward and lead the way. As a school district, we are always looking to add positive, caring individuals, that can serve as role models to our students and others to our team. If you know someone that you think might make a great teacher, custodian, bus driver, or coach, do not hesitate to send them our way.

The start of the school year has set the tone for an exciting year ahead. Below, I have selected a few stories to give you an idea of all the great work already underway, and you can always find more by downloading the Hemlock Public School District App or following us on Facebook or Twitter. I trust you will be inspired and share my enthusiasm with what you find.

Be well, be safe, all the best,

Don Killingbeck Jr., Ed.D.
