Hemlock High School is continuing its commitment to helping students plan for life after graduation, thanks in part to support from the Michigan Department of Education FAFSA Completion Grant. The grant helps schools increase student access to financial aid and postsecondary opportunities by supporting efforts that guide seniors and their families through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process.
Through these efforts, Hemlock High School has reached a FAFSA completion rate of nearly 80 percent among its senior class, a milestone that reflects the school’s focus on preparing students for the next step after high school.
“These efforts are about helping every student see a clear pathway to their future,” said Keith Green, Principal of Hemlock High School. “Whether students plan to attend a university, community college, technical program, or enter the workforce with additional training, completing the FAFSA opens doors. We want our students to understand that financial aid can make those opportunities possible, and we are committed to helping them navigate the process with confidence.”
The FAFSA Completion Grant provides funding that allows Hemlock High School to expand outreach efforts, provide informational sessions for families, and offer hands-on assistance to students completing their financial aid applications. By removing barriers and providing personalized support, the school is helping ensure more students have access to scholarships, grants, work study opportunities, and other forms of financial aid.
As part of these efforts, Hemlock High School also celebrates student progress through “Donut Days” during the month of March, recognizing seniors who have successfully completed their FAFSA. The event encourages participation while celebrating students who are taking an important step toward their future.
“Sometimes the FAFSA process can feel complicated for students and families,” said Kyle Boros, Dean of Students at Hemlock High School. “This grant allows us to sit down with students, answer questions, and walk them through the process step by step. When a student completes their FAFSA, it unlocks opportunities that can make college, technical training, or other postsecondary paths much more affordable.”
In addition to FAFSA completion efforts, the grant also strengthens Hemlock High School’s focus on career and college readiness. Students have opportunities to receive one-on-one counseling and connect with representatives from Delta College, colleges and universities across Michigan, and the armed forces. These visits help students explore educational pathways, training programs, and career opportunities available after graduation.
Hemlock High School continues to look for new ways to engage students in planning for their future and ensuring they have access to the resources needed to succeed after high school. District leaders say the FAFSA Completion Grant plays an important role in supporting that mission.
By combining strong guidance, hands-on support, and meaningful celebrations of student progress, Hemlock High School is helping ensure that every senior has the opportunity to pursue their goals and build a successful future.
