ribbon cutting

Hemlock Public School District officially cut the ribbon on the new Legend Gymnasium at Hemlock High School on Friday, December 12, marking a proud milestone for students, staff, and the greater Huskie community.

Surrounded by members of the Hemlock Board of Education, Sports Boosters, building leaders, community supporters, and several “true Hemlock legends,” district leaders celebrated the opening of a space designed to elevate the student experience and strengthen community pride. While crews will continue fine-tuning elements of the facility and completing the walking track, the gymnasium is now officially open for students and staff.

Board President Matt Wesener emphasized the meaning behind the moment and the partnership that made it possible. “The Legend Gymnasium represents what Hemlock does best—coming together around our kids,” said Wesener. “This space will serve students, teams, families, and community members for generations. We’re proud of what we’ve built, and we’re equally committed to finishing strong as we fine-tune the details and complete the walking track.”

The district was honored to celebrate alongside two individuals whose connection to Hemlock athletics represents both tradition and legacy:

  • James Wilsey | 1957 All-Sport Award winner

  • John Mulvaney | 1968 Hemlock alumnus & 2023 Hall of Famer

District leaders emphasized that the Legend Gymnasium is part of Hemlock’s ongoing commitment to safe, high-quality, student-centered learning environments—and offered special appreciation to the community for making the project possible.

“This is a big moment for Hemlock,” said Superintendent Don Killingbeck. “The Legend Gymnasium is more than a beautiful new space—it’s an investment in kids, in culture, and in the belief that small towns can build big opportunities. We’re opening the doors now so our students can benefit immediately, and we’ll keep working until every finishing detail—especially the walking track—is completed the right way.”

“We also want to say thank you—plain and simple—to our community and voters,” Killingbeck added. “Our 2022 tax-neutral bond initiative would not have happened without your support. We are forever grateful for the trust you’ve shown and the continued support you give our students and staff.”

More updates will be shared as final project elements are completed and the walking track is officially finished.
