Ling Kids

The Hemlock Public School District Board of Education held its October regular meeting at K.C. Ling Elementary, where trustees were greeted by smiling faces and enthusiastic learners. Fourth-grade students opened the meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance and the school’s Student Pledge to Learn, then performed a festive Halloween song for families and guests. Trustees also toured the school’s STEAM classroom to see hands-on activities in circuits on the LEGO wall and student-programmed robots in action. (K.C. Ling Elementary School)

“As a board, we’re committed to inspect what we expect. That means witnessing first hand the tremendous student engagement and outstanding teaching happening within the walls of our schools,” said Board President Matt Wesener. “Our recent visit to K.C. Ling showcased engaged students, dedicated staff, and the kind of real-world, hands-on learning that prepares Huskies for the future.” (Hemlock Public School District)

During the STEAM classroom visit, students demonstrated how they design simple circuits and write beginner-friendly code to control sensors and motors—approaches that align with research-supported, project-based learning and SAMS Lab age-appropriate robotics platforms for elementary students.

Superintendent Dr. Don Killingbeck praised the students and staff: “K.C. Ling’s STEAM program is a great example of our ‘Kids First’ mission—curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving all in one room. Seeing our fourth graders explain circuits and code reminds us why these in-building meetings matter: they keep the Board closely connected to students, staff, and the day-to-day life of our schools.” (Full STEAM Ahead, 2017)

This year, the Board is rotating meetings between the district board room and school buildings to deepen engagement with students and staff and to highlight instructional spaces across the district. Meeting schedules, locations, and agendas are posted on the district’s website. (Hemlock Public School District)
