Stewardship

Hemlock Public School District is in the middle of a season filled with noise, dust, hard hats, and caution tape—but beneath it all is a story of careful planning, responsible leadership, and steadfast dedication to our students and community.

From the newly expanded Lockwood STEM Center to the performing arts and athletic facility construction currently underway, progress is visible across our campuses. While some of these exciting projects are funded through community-approved bonds, others are financed through alternative means. But no matter the funding source, the guiding principle remains the same: to be good stewards of every dollar entrusted to us.

Over the past several years, Hemlock has not only turned around its financial standing but has become a model for other districts across the state. In fact, the Michigan Association of School Boards and Michigan School Business Officials now recognize Hemlock Public School District as a district to watch—setting the standard for sound fiscal practices.

Board President Matt Wesener reflected, “The continuous progress we’ve seen in our financial standing is a testament to our collective commitment and clear focus. We’ve not only righted the ship but are steering a course toward sustainable growth.”

In Michigan, it’s common for school districts to borrow money to cover payroll costs—especially during lean months before state funding hits. Hemlock, however, has not had to borrow a dime for payroll for six consecutive years. That translates into significant savings—tens of thousands of dollars annually—that go back into our classrooms and programs.

“Our efforts have solidified the financial foundation of this district,” shared Board Treasurer Jamie Rivette. “It means we’re not borrowing money to pay our teachers and staff. It means more resources for students. And it means we’re looking ahead with strength and stability.”

Superintendent Dr. Don Killingbeck added, “We are committed to maximizing the impact of every resource, from professional development to curriculum to staffing. At the end of the day, this is about students—and we take seriously the responsibility to invest in their future with wisdom and integrity.”

So while we know construction detours and temporary inconveniences may not always be easy, we want our community to know: we’re not done yet. And what’s ahead is worth the wait.

The best is yet to come.
