The Power of Encouragement: What Parents Say About Attendance Matters

When it comes to helping children succeed in school, one of the most powerful tools parents have is their voice. Studies show that the way parents talk about school and attendance can directly influence a child’s mindset and motivation.

At Hemlock Public School District, we encourage parents and caregivers to use positive, affirming language around attendance. Phrases like “I’m proud of you for showing up today” or “School is important because it helps you grow” may seem simple, but they send a clear message that school matters, and that each day counts.

“Students are listening, even when we don’t realize it,” said Lindy Beckman, Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “When families speak about attendance in a supportive way, it builds a foundation for responsibility, pride, and a lifelong value for education.”

According to research from Attendance Works, students are more likely to have good attendance when their families understand why it’s important, and when they feel supported in getting to school regularly. That support can be as simple as a consistent morning routine, having conversations about what happened at school, or celebrating good attendance.

Words carry weight. By reinforcing the importance of attendance in a positive, encouraging way, families help set their children on a path toward academic success, stronger relationships, and future readiness.
