Hemlock Public School District proudly hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Friday to celebrate the construction of Graf Field, a key part of the district's athletic facilities and a tribute to legendary softball coach Larry Graf. Coach Graf was in attendance to cut the ribbon himself, marking the beginning of a new era for the field that bears his name. Community members, district leaders, athletes, and alumni gathered to honor Coach Graf’s continued legacy and witness the unveiling of the newly built field.

Coach Larry Graf led the Hemlock High School Softball program for 28 years, from 1986 to 2013, amassing a record of 702 wins and 272 losses making an impressive 72% win rate. His influence reached far beyond the diamond, instilling values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance in countless student-athletes. Recognized as District Coach of the Year five times and Regional Coach of the Year three times, Graf also had the honor of coaching the MHSAA D3 State All-Star game in 2000. His teams made state Quarterfinal and semifinal appearances, with the 2000 team advancing to the state semifinals. His crowning achievement came in 1998 when Hemlock’s team finished with a remarkable 38-4 record, earning him the title of Saginaw Area Dream Team Coach.

Superintendent Dr. Don Killingbeck spoke at the ceremony, reflecting on Coach Graf's influence. "Larry Graf’s legacy is a significant part of Hemlock athletics. His commitment to excellence, both on and off the field, has shaped the lives of so many students. Graf Field stands as a tribute to his lasting impact and the spirit of teamwork and perseverance he champions."

The celebration concluded with a ceremonial first pitch thrown by Larry Graf himself, followed by a thrilling softball game between Hemlock High School and Valley Lutheran High School. The Hemlock Huskies triumphed over the Valley Lutheran Chargers, marking the first official victory on the newly renovated field.

Board President Matt Wesener also shared his thoughts: "The construction of Graf Field is more than just an upgrade to our facilities; it serves as a tribute to Coach Graf's contributions to our community. His legacy of sportsmanship and mentorship will continue to inspire generations of athletes."

The district extends its gratitude to all who contributed to the construction project, ensuring that Graf Field remains a place where athletes can thrive and community spirit can flourish for years to come.
