Rendering of the Patrick Wolgast Fieldhouse

Hemlock Public School District is thrilled to announce the commencement of construction on “The Patrick Wolgast Fieldhouse,” a project made possible by a $1,000,000 grant secured through Congressman Dan Kildee’s Community Project Funding and additional private donations. After a year of anticipation following the initial notification, the district received final authorization from the USDA in late March 2025 to begin expending the funds.

In December 2024, the district released a request for proposal, gathered competitive bids, and with the Hemlock Board of Education’s approval, selected Pumford Construction as the contractor for this significant project. The fieldhouse aims to boost youth health and activity by providing a year-round facility for athletic and wellness programs, serving both students and the wider community.

Superintendent Dr. Don Killingbeck expressed his enthusiasm and gratitude, stating, "After a year of waiting, we are thrilled to finally break ground on ‘The Patrick Wolgast Fieldhouse.’ This project will be a game-changer for our students and the entire community. I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Patrick Wolgast Family, Congressman Dan Kildee for his support, and the USDA for their authorization. This facility will provide our youth with remarkable opportunities for year-round activity, contributing significantly to their health and well-being for generations to come."

The fieldhouse is designed to be a central hub for various athletic and wellness activities, offering students and community members access to indoor sports facilities and health-oriented programs, regardless of seasonal constraints. The facility is anticipated to be ready for community use by early 2026.

Board President Matt Wesener shared his excitement, adding, "This is a momentous occasion for Hemlock. The commencement of this project signifies our district’s and community’s commitment to the development of our students holistically. We are dedicated to providing not only exceptional education but also the resources necessary for a healthy and active lifestyle. We are eager to see the positive impact this fieldhouse will have on our youth and the entire community."

The district expressed its appreciation for all the hard work and energy put forth by so many people to move this project forward, including Moltus Building Group and Justin Lipscomb, whose efforts have been instrumental in propelling this project off the ground.

While the necessary funding to begin construction is secured, opportunities for further support remain. Specifically, Hemlock Public School District envisions the fieldhouse including a vibrant outdoor event area that will require additional resources to fully realize its potential. The district welcomes continued partnership through financial contributions or in-kind donations of materials or services to bring this vision to life.

Hemlock Public School District is dedicated to providing a high-quality education that empowers students to succeed in college, career, and life. With a strong focus on innovation, community engagement, and student well-being, the district strives to create learning environments that are safe, supportive, and geared toward 21st-century success.
