Hemlock Public School District recently celebrated a momentous occasion with the grand opening of the Lockwood STEM Center, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to inspiring future leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Adding a special touch to this landmark event, the district also honored the remarkable 30-year career of Hemlock High School teacher and STEM champion, Dana Lockwood, with a community-wide "Dana Parade."
For three decades, Dana Lockwood served as a cornerstone of Hemlock High School, impacting countless students through her engaging Business and Accounting classes, her leadership of work-based learning programs, and her dedication as a coach and mentor for the internationally recognized Hemlock's Gray Matter #5712 Robotics team (2024 State Champions). Beyond the classroom, Dana, alongside her husband, Tom, played a vital role in spearheading fundraising efforts that brought the Lockwood STEM Center to life, demonstrating extraordinary commitment to providing cutting-edge opportunities for students.
Superintendent Dr. Don Killingbeck reflected on the celebration, stating, "Dana's impact on Hemlock is immeasurable. She not only shaped the lives of countless students but also was a driving force behind the Lockwood STEM Center, ensuring that future generations have access to exceptional learning opportunities. This grand opening, held in conjunction with our celebration of Dana, marked a significant milestone for our district and our community."
In a heartfelt tribute to her years of service and the deep influence she had on students and staff alike, the Hemlock community, including family members, students, and staff, lined Pine Street on May 2nd at 10:00 AM for the “Dana Parade.” The celebration featured the Hemlock High School band filling the air with music, the spirited Pompon squad adding their energy, and Dana and Tom Lockwood riding in style aboard the beloved Huskie Express, the district’s own train. The event captured the close-knit spirit of the Hemlock community and celebrated a day that will be fondly remembered by all in attendance.
The parade concluded at the Lockwood STEM Center, where the grand opening festivities continued with student-led tours, remarks from district leaders, and a shared excitement about the center’s future impact.
“Dana Lockwood's dedication to Hemlock's students and her tireless advocacy for STEM education have been truly inspiring,” said Board of Education President Matt Wesener. “The Lockwood STEM Center stands as a testament to her vision and hard work, and this ‘Dana Parade’ was a fitting way to celebrate her legacy as she begins her well-deserved retirement.”
The event brought together students, educators, community partners, and families to celebrate both a career of extraordinary service and the opening of a facility that will continue that legacy for years to come.
Hemlock Public School District is committed to providing a high-quality education that empowers students to succeed in college, career, and life.
