Robotics State Finals

After a thrilling decade of innovation and teamwork, Hemlock's Gray Matter Team #5712 has risen to the top, clinching the title of State Champions in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Celebrating their 10th anniversary in the competition, this monumental achievement highlights the team's dedication and skill.

The team competed at the FIRST Robotics Michigan State Championship at Saginaw Valley State University over the weekend with 160 teams from around the state. Hemlock’s Gray Matter finished first on Hemlock Semiconductor Field. After qualifying matches, they were able to select two hall-of-fame teams (team 27 Rush from Clarkston and team 51 Wings of Fire from Pontiac). These teams formed a formidable alliance, setting multiple high scores throughout the day.

In playoffs, the alliance won Hemlock Semiconductor Field and advanced to the “FIMstein” championship field. In the double elimination finals Hemlock went undefeated to win the championship. Gray Matter is now the number 1 ranked team in the state of Michigan (of 514 teams) and is also ranked number 1 by Statbotics advanced metrics.

Under the exceptional guidance of lead mentors Tom and Dana Lockwood, Gray Matter has grown into a force. With over 30 talented students, the support of stellar mentors, and generous sponsorship, the team has navigated the complex and competitive world of FIRST robotics with remarkable success.

The Board President Matt Wesener highlighted the district's commitment to fostering innovation: "Our focus has always been on pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Gray Matter's success is a shining example of our commitment to innovation and the incredible potential of our students."

Currently, Team #5712, representing a close-knit community of just over 1200 students, stands proud as the #1 ranked team in the State of Michigan. Their impressive performance has also earned them a #21 ranking in the United States and #24 globally.

Superintendent Don Killingbeck added a note of gratitude: "I am immensely proud of everyone involved. Their hard work and dedication have brought this remarkable achievement to our district. Thank you to each and every one of you for your contributions and for carrying the spirit of Hemlock with such honor."

Team #5712's success is not just a victory for the team but a beacon of inspiration for the entire Hemlock community and beyond. As they continue to excel in robotics and innovation, they pave the way for future generations of dreamers and doers.

Tom Lockwood said, “When Dana and I started the team in 2015 we had no idea what we were getting into. The community support, the dedication of our students and mentors has been just incredible. Our students get to work with world-class engineers and business professionals. These opportunities are truly priceless and makes Hemlock the place to be for advanced educational opportunities."
