The Michigan High School Coaches Association (MHSCA), a professional organization of school coaches and athletic directors, has selected Scott Neumeyer of Hemlock Public School District as the MHSCA Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.
Hemlock Athletic Director Cory Snider stated, “Having Scott's vision and effort in developing such an amazing program receiving high praise is rewarding to all players and coaches, past and present. He has always been an outstanding coach, mentor, teacher, and person, and to see it pay off with a state title and individual recognition is very special”.
The award will be presented to Coach Neumeyer on November 12, 2023, at the Ramada Lansing Hotel & Conference Center, 7501 West Saginaw Highway, Lansing, MI at the MHSCA Winter Awards Luncheon in which over 28 coaches and athletic directors will participate.
After being forced to forfeit before the state semifinals due to COVID in 2021, Neumeyer rallied his team back to the Breslin Center in 2023 and won it all for the first time in program history with an overall record of 26-3. Superintendent Don Killingbeck said, “In sports, it's more than scores or victories. It's about resilience, character, and togetherness. Coach Neumeyer has imparted life lessons that echo far beyond the basketball court. His commitment and foresight embody MHSCA's values, and we are immensely proud.”
In response to his team’s state championship win, Coach Neumeyer reflected, “In a day and age where many people have a tendency to quit when things become difficult, it was gratifying to see a group of girls stick together and dig in rather than give in. It was inspiring to me to see them do that, and I hope it served as an example to the younger kids in our program and in our community.”
The MHSCA wishes to Congratulate Hemlock Public School District and Coach Scott Neumeyer on being selected as the State Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. The selection and nomination for these awards comes from each coach's constituent sport association and through the Michigan High School Coaches Association. The MHSCA are very proud to spotlight Scott Neumeyer - a person whose work and values best mirror those of the association.
