Hemlock, MI – The Hemlock Public School District is taking a proactive approach to recruit and retain substitute teachers. The district will be rolling out a multifaceted initiative aimed at recruiting and retaining qualified substitute teachers starting January 2022.
First, educating people about the needed qualifications for a substitute teacher. It appears that some people are confused by what is required. The daily substitute permit requires a minimum of 60 semester hours of satisfactory credit (grade ‘C’ or better) combined from one or more regionally accredited two- or four-year colleges or universities in accordance with Michigan Compiled Law (MCL) 380.1233. In addition to making sure people know what it takes to get started, the district has increased the daily substitute rate of pay from $90 to $105 and created a tier system.
- General Substitute, $105 per day.
- *Preferred Substitute, $125 per day ( up to Elem/Ling – 4, MS – 3, HS -3).
- Retired Teacher, $150 per day.
Also added into the mix is a monthly drawing called “Double Days” for those that substituted 10 days the month before. They are eligible to earn double their sub rate for the following month.
Our best source of securing substitutes so far is other substitutes, so we have added a buddy bump. If one of our substitute teachers recruits a new substitute after they work for ten days, the referring person receives a $100 bump in pay the next time they substitute for the day.
