Hemlock Public School District’s Art Department selected six high school students to participate on a snow sculpting team to compete against 19 other Michigan high schools at Zehnder’s Snowfest this year. Hemlock brought home a First Place Award. The team’s design “Paradise,” was in tribute to the devastating California wildfires and the heartache that was seen on animal’s faces when trying to desperately escape the flames.  The bear’s seated position shows vulnerability and defeat, while a burnt out tree behind him represents the devastation of his environment.

Art Teacher and snow sculpting coach RaeAnn Woodcock shared, “Our team did an absolutely amazing job creating this heartfelt and meaningful composition. From original brainstorming, and preparation, through the completion of final sculpture, our team worked together seamlessly. I am so very proud of them and what they have accomplished.”

Hemlock’s present winning team qualifies them to carve in the State of Michigan level at the 2020 Snowfest. In 2020, Hemlock High School will have two teams competing. One at the high school level and one at the state level.

In addition, students are hard at work preparing compositions for the annual Love of the Arts Night Art Show, in May held at Hemlock High School.  This amazing event is a community favorite and is completely astonishing each and every year. We hope to see everyone there again this year!
