Hemlock High School Book Club 2009-2010 Good Books, Good Friends, Good Food Our book club is currently reading Deadline by Chris Cruthcer. Our discussion for this book will be on November 18th during lunch periods. ABOUT THE BOOK:
Ben Wolf has big things planned for his senior year. Had big things planned. Now what he has is some very bad news and only one year left to make his mark on the world. How can a pint-sized, smarty pants seventeen-year-old do anything significant in the nowheresville of Trout, Idaho? First, Ben makes sure that no one else knows what is going on-not his superstar quarterback brother, Cody, not his parents, not his coach, no one. Next, he decides to become the best 127-pound football player Trout High has ever seen; to give his close-minded civics teacher a daily migraine; and to help the local drunk clean up his act. And then there's Dallas Suzuki. Amazingly perfect, fascinating Dallas Suzuki, who may or may not give Ben the time of day. Really, she's first on the list. Living with a secret isn't easy, though, and Ben's resolve begins to crumble . . . especially when he realizes that he isn't the only person in Trout with secrets.

On October 15, the Hemlock High School Book Club attended a Great Michigan Read event at Grace Dow Library in Midland. Author Bich Minh Nguyen discussed her book Stealing Buddha's Dinner. After the presentation, we met with the author and asked her to sign our books. Here are pictures from this event.

If you have not yet picked up your copy, please see me. I've heard nothing but good things about this book!!! Our meeting for Deadline will be November 18.
Would you like to order a Book Club shirt? Short sleeve t-shirts cost $9.50 and long-sleeve t-shirts cost $12.50. Shirts are black and say "got books?" on the front and "we do./Hemlock High School Book Club/Good Books, Good Friends, Good Food" on the back. They are black with white print. (Those who wanted blue got out-voted. Sorry.) I need to have your money by November 11 if you would like a shirt.
Announcing a new Book Club contest!! Win a $10.00 Barnes & Noble gift card and a free CD and some candy!!! Here's how: Create a soundtrack for Deadline. Come up with ten songs (school appropriate) that relate in some way to the book. (Think of topics in the book such as running, football, love, trucks, etc.) Make a list and include the song title and the artist. Give the list to me by November 11. A panel of judges will determine the winning soundtrack. (The lists will be anonymous when submitted to the judges.) ALL participants will receive a copy of the Deadline soundtrack and some candy! See me RIGHT NOW for a contest entry form. Reminder : We'll be taking over Barnes & Noble on December 5. Think of ideas to promote our school and encourage community members to shop that day. Think about story times, skits, music, sing-alongs, Christmas activities, etc. We will receive a percentage of that day's sales if customers mention our school when they make a purchase. We'll talk more about this in the next week or two. P.S. Happy Halloween! See me RIGHT NOW for a contest entry form.
